Step into my world…

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

Just a quick note today… I finally took some photos of the place I call home, so, bask in the poor photography and almost-finished style of The Supernicety’s Southeastern Regional Office.

Of course, right now, it looks like hell since all the meticulously put away things in the wash-closet have come out and the “bar”, shoe rack, etc. moved into the center of the room to make way for the long awaited arrival of my washer and dryer.

Thank god. I’ll have to wash nearly everything i own in the next few days.

Well… ok then.

So, the upgrade is done, without much strife, thankfully.

You’ve probably noticed that things look different. As I predicted, there have been some inconsistencies in the way the templating system works in the new version of WordPress versus the old. I think it’s probably pretty easy to correct, but not so easy that I was able to fix it right away, so for at least a few hours, we’re stuck with this.

In the meantime, let me know if anything else isn’t working… chances are if you read this, you already have my email address, but if not, send things related to this site to thesupernicety AT gmail DOT com.

Holla!

Prepare thyselves…

Well, I’ve come to the conclusion that the blog here needs an update. For one, we’re getting spammed pretty hard — most don’t make it to the main threads, but I spend 15 minutes cleaning out the garbage almost every day. The antispam tool I had been using seems to have stopped working entirely, so it’s time to trade up. That comes at the cost, however, of requiring a full upgrade of the wordpress backend.

So, I plan to take care of that tonight. With luck, the site will only be down for a few minutes, though there’s a pretty high probability that the appearance will take some time to restore. WordPress changed it’s templating/theme engine between versions and I’m not sure what will be required to take the old images and such, and graft them into the new templates.

Once that’s done, a new antispam tool will be in place which, I hope, will reduce the burden of keeping the site spam free. If it were possible, I’d like to hit them with a big electric shock everytime they press a key, but, that tech isn’t here yet I guess.

in accordance with the prophesy…

Welcome to theSupernicety, version 3.0

I finally got to the point where the old design just felt too dark and ponderous, not to mention dense, so i embarked on a redesign. Then I accidentally deleted all the files I created, throwing me into a fit of depressed resignation. Less fury though, which I think is a sign of growth.

Anyhow, I’ve also been growing increasingly fed up with the comment spam that had accrued. That shit snuck up on me when I wasn’t paying attention (read as: updating the blacklist) and it rapidly reached a critical mass which thwarted all attempts at sanitizing, and which rendered the site less than completely useful. This straw, of ancient proverb, broke the back of my lazy camel and forced me to pack my things, don my cap, and start out, yet again, on the road to a newer, better, cleaner, smarter site. Ok, so the last is probably wishful thinking, but I’d like to think the other three have been mostly achieved. I hope it is liked.

The new blog resides upon a WordPress backend and the design is a modification of the excellent Kubrick template, as I acknowledge in the footer below. As it turns out, I’m no good at web design, so I look for someone who is, and use the fruits of their creative labor. Of course, I did the header and footer images which, simple though they are, work pretty well, I think. I chose WordPress as the engine because I felt like it had better, more robust anti-spam options available, offered a simpler, less cluttered codebase, and, in part, because of the nice template which was so easy to install and modify to suit my desires.

I had originally planned to import the old entries from MT into WP, but found only failure and defeat, which my fragile ego simply could handle no more of. So, instead, the entire thing, spam and all, was relegated to a subdirectory, saved for posterity… you will find it, such is my ego, under the “Necessities” heading in our linkup section over to the right.

Ok, I have rambled long enough.

It’s almost the new year, so let’s resolve to talk more, shall we? Good.
