After the death of the cd long box…
After the death of the cd long box, I propose the banning of the cd jewel case sticker. I understand that the name of the band and the album title being displayed on top makes searching through cd racks easier for everyone, but does it need to be a sticker? If anything, I propose that the delay of instant gratification presented by the sticker after the purchase of the cd is un-American and should be banned in order to preserve freedom and our way of life!!!
Every time I buy a cd, I struggle with these stupid stickers. Many of these stickers were made in complete disregard of sticker technology that has been developed since we landed an American on the moon. Instead, these stickers use a substance that never actually comes off the jewel case long after the sticker has been disposed of.
Join me as we make a difference in our daily lives…or at least our lives on Tuesdays when new cds drop at your local cd store.
Some of you will suggest the use of the cd jewel case sticker razor that can be purchased at some stores. I suggest that this is not a solution because this only allows one to cut the sticker in order to open the cd jewel case. It does not get rid of the sticker problem. The only solution is to propose legislation for a total band. Also, let us use this as an opportunity to slip legislation into the bill to ban Rob Thomas from all music studios…Gospel has been spoken…

Well, i fully agree with the “Rob Thomas Hurts America” rider, for sure.
I also hate the damn stickers, though they’re actually annoying on purpose, to prevent, ah, shrinkage, ostensibly. Of course, it’s pretty easy to get the CD out without even breaking the sticker, which defeats that argument pretty handily.
As for the looking through the CD’s point, I’ve always figured it’s just as easy to store the things spine up… If anything, you get more shelf real estate that way. But then you don’t get to look at the cover, which clearly HAS TO be oriented precisely as it is. I suggest a different solution… align the cover images so that they’re right side up if you hold the CD spine up. Of course, spine text should read properly when held that way.
Course, I’ve basically quit listening to CD’s except on rare occasions anyway… usually the first thing I do when I get the cd is take the case apart so it opens with the sticker as a “hinge”, and rip the CD on my media computer. Then put the CD back, close the case up and stick it on the “to file” stack.

The proper way to open a CD jewel case that has been stickerized is to use a fingernail to pop the “bottom” (unstuck) side of the front off its pivot and use the stickered side as a hinge to open the CD. When the CD is open and the two halves of the case are held together only by the sticker then it is much much easier to remove it.
That’s really much harder to explain than I thought it would be…
