I was wrong.

I take back all the nice things I said about the iPhone.

Leopard’s release will be delayed half a year because of it.

However awesome the iPhone may be, its batteries won’t last long enough for it to download your Google Map on lo-speed mobile internet anyway.

Screw it.

i agree that this is quite wack. i certainly care more about Leopard.

also: i am pretty sure that the battery this is unsubstantiated at this point. If it’s true, then all is lost.

In the interim, I’m pretty sure that I’m getting a pearl. now if they’d only put wifi in it…

Meh. This doesn’t make me happy of course, but it doesn’t change the genuine innovations of the iPhone.

I’m certainly revising my already middle of the road assessment of the device downward as a result of this announcement, but the thing could cause cancer and it wouldn’t change the fact that the interface is really unique and the first major innovation we’ve seen in a long time. I’m not gonna take back those positive assessments.

I’m just adding this to the dissapointingly substantial negative column, right there with slow EDGE networking techmology and probably battery issues.

As for that last, I’d rather have this thing out in the world with a weak battery than not have it at all. I consider the device more important from the standpoint of pushing the industry to innovate (as apple has done in, well, every other area they touch) than as a phone to purchase. It’s pushing the envelope of phone design and for me, that’s valuable in and of itself. Battery tech is stuck in a relative stone age… advances coming slowly… at this point it’s one of the main things hampering new device development I think. If Apple can coax two days out of this one with 1-1.5 hours of internet activity in that period, they’ll be doing as well as my Samsung.

Anyway, I also wish they hadn’t cannibalized their OSX devs to get it done. I’ve been looking forward to Leopard for some time. But I’m overall still glad they made the effort. There’s nothing about not having Leopard that’s damaging my life in any real way…

Secondary and completely selfish reason this doesn’t bother me too much :

This fall is a potential time for me to get an upgraded computer, and this way I can get it with Leopard pre-loaded, and not be (as) tempted to put leopard on my current machine…

So it could save me a few bucks.

Well, let me disclose that when speech support for 日本語 comes out, the internet will be a wild new paradise for yours truly…. postponed by the hifalutin iphone.
