tom brokaw is still compelling.
wow. i just watched a program, hosted by Tom Brokaw as part of the olympics coverage, discussing the life of Mr. Vernon Baker. Baker, a veteran of the second world war, endured unbelievable yet commonplace racism as a buffalo soldier and ended up a hero, seen in many quarters of italy as their liberator. this is apropos, of course, because the castle, outside of which the major events leading to his Distinguished Service Cross and Medal of Honor occurred, is located just outside of torino. anyway, there is apparently a book out called lasting valor, and i would strongly suggest getting it or looking for the NBC program on youtube or something. well worth your time.
